Monday, March 8...Pump Up The Jam (Technotronic)

Kim didn’t image last night because clouds rolled in and it was still cloudy this morning.  Warm still so it was nice to have some cloud cover keeping the heat down when I went for my walk.  Sun did peek out between the clouds occasionally throughout the day.  Saw a high of 84o in the afternoon.  Good day to seek the shade.

This afternoon Dylan started singing this  line over and over:  I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not.  He then asked if I could play his mommy’s jam.  Your mommy’s jam? What’s the name of it?  He didn’t know but he knew the words I'm fine, yeah I'm fine oh I'm fine, hey I'm fine but I'm not were in it.  Took some googling and input from Marshal but we came up with it:  Matthew West singing Truth Be Told.  We listened to it...he sang along.

Then he said his daddy’s jam was about burning the ships.  So I googled ‘burning ships’ and found a song called Burn The Ships by for KING & COUNTRY.  Dylan didn’t recognize the opening strains and said, Okay, now I have to listen to the words and I’ll tell you if this is the one”....as soon as the chorus came he matter-of-factly said, “Oh, yeah, this is my Daddy’s jam.”  So we listened to it.

Then Clayton wanted to know what my jam was and once we established exactly what ‘jam’ meant (any song that you just have to turn up when it comes on) I played ‘Parachute’ by Chris Stapleton. Neither child seemed impressed.  Dylan’s favorite song is “Home on the Range” but I don’t know if he considers that his jam.  I’ll have to ask him tomorrow.

We went to Organ Stop Pizza this afternoon which was a major change for me.  We’ve done plenty of take-out since COVID became a thing but I’ve eaten in a restaurant only once in the past year.  I checked the website to see that COVID protocols remained in place despite Governor Ducey allowing restaurants to operate at full capacity.  Masks are still required anytime not at the table.  Other safety measures include only 250 people allowed inside at a time (occupancy is 750)...hostess seating...one party at a table at a time...check in at the door...sanitizer available throughout the restaurant...tables sanitized between usages.  Seemed safe enough.  And the best part is that the door opens at 3:30 with the music starting at 4 p.m.  Plenty of time to experience the music, eat some pizza and still be home during daylight hours.

The draw at Organ Stop Pizza is the theater organ...well, and they do have very good pizza, too.  But the organ is the main event...it’s an opportunity to watch the music being played
in addition to listening to it.

We were on the second floor which meant the kids had a birds-eye view of the organist and most of the instrumentation. The kids had mixed reactions: Clayton got bored quickly then thought it was too loud....Shelby thought it was scary until the organist played “Let It Go” then we saw a smile...Charlie wanted to be anywhere but in a chair...Dylan was into it.  In fact, Dylan was thinking it was magic because he didn’t know how the drums over in the corner could be playing by themselves...and the bubbles.

Doze bubbles have to be magic, Gramma.  And how did doze puppets dance?  And that piano...doze keys were moving but no one was dare.  It had to be magic udderwise they were invisible.”  Near our table were about seven floor to ceiling wooden pipes...imagine gigantic wooden toy train whistles with a large opening at the bottom.  I think they played low bass notes.  At one point Dylan asked if he could look at them.  When I turned to check on him he had his head stuck inside of it; he came out with a grin...said he could really hear the sound.

When all was said and done, the kids each found something in the experience to enjoy even if it was just the ice cream and I enjoyed watching them. 😊

As we were getting ready to leave they saw people putting money in a jar down by the organ stage. They wanted to know what that was about.  When I explained that it was a ‘tip’, a way to express extra appreciation for the organist’s effort, they all wanted to do it.  Gave each of them a dollar and they proudly deposited it in the jar before we left.

Then it was back to the camp for movie night.  We knew in advance that the kids wanted Grampa’s popcorn so we brought the Whirly Popper and all the necessary items to make it.  Kids brought their chairs, Marshal brought his TV, hooked it up outside and we had a drive-in movie without vehicles.  Complete with Grampa’s popcorn.  Movie of choice was BFG based on the book by Roald Dahl.

Callie had read the book to the kids so they were looking forward to seeing it...it was a first viewing for all of us.  Shelby and Charlie were a little scared so they didn’t last long...Clayton and Dylan liked it.  Giggled like crazy during the ‘whizz popping’ scene with the Queen of England.  Dylan commented that the movie was different than the book (Marshal agreed) and when I asked which he liked better, there was no hesitation when he said, “Da movie.”

--------------------

I had never been a Roald Dahl fan so I’d never read or seen BFG.  Didn’t really know what to expect but it was a bit weirder than I thought...very watchable, just weird.

No bike ride today because there was only a small window of time for it.  Would have been a good day for it though.
