A dump truck, a doobie and damp firewood

Monday, September 7…..

What’s Labor Day without a parade?  We attended a parade today in Waddy, KY, where Marshal and Callie live.  The street was lined with people…and I didn’t know that Waddy had that many people.   And along with the other festivities, it was garage sale day.  Seems like every home and church along the parade route (maybe ½ mile long on the main street) had a yard sale.  There was a 5K run earlier in the morning and I’d heard there were other events throughout the day.  We attended the parade and mingled a bit, but it was hot and the pull of air conditioning was strong so headed back to Marshal’s.
The biggest event of the day was yet to come….Cullen got his ride in Marshal’s dump truck….the truck he'd spent all weekend spray washing.  Didn’t matter that he mostly sprayed the tires...the truck was gonna be clean when Marshal finally said it was time.  Under Marshal’s watchful eye, Cullen had to do a pre-ride inspection, which mostly consisted of kicking each tire and making sure it sounded good.  It was a tight fit with Marshal, Cullen, Ashlyn and Zac in the cab, but they squeezed in for a short ride down the road…and the truck even made it back up the driveway.  Before getting out, Cullen got to operate the dumper, too.  I think Uncle Marshal may have just won the Favorite Uncle of the Day award for that one.  J
We had already decided that we would be leaving sometime today after the parade, so when planning our route, I checked out a KOA about 200 miles away….near the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.  That was a doable afternoon ride.  Got on the road about 1:30….had to stop down the road to get a good signal for the GPS and lo and behold! Phil came up with the same main route that we had…Bluegrass Parkway to Western Kentucky Parkway and then the last 30 miles or so were local roads, which is where Phil really shines.  The Bluegrass Pkwy ends at US 65 and to get to the Western Kentucky Pkwy, one must take US 65 for a mile or so to the proper exit.  So, we’re on 65 and all signs are indicating the next exit is the Western Kentucky Parkway exit.  I start reminding Kim that our exit is coming up, even though we don’t have helmet communicators and there’s no way he can hear me….but I still tell him because his blinker isn’t coming on.  L  He drives past the exit and just as I’m reaching that point of being past the exit, he points as if to say “That was our exit”.  I yelled “No kidding!!” and started thinking bad thoughts about Phil as we cruised past several more exits….now we’re heading south instead of west and this is not right.  To his credit, Phil did eventually get us back to the Western KY Pkwy…by taking us through 15 miles of those twisty hilly KY backroads that have no shoulder and drop off into a 4 foot ditch.  So, today I failed at my goal of turning off the map in my head and just going along for the ride; but, as Scarlet O’Hara said, “…tomorrow IS another day!”
Highest temp I saw was 92o….and that was in the afternoon past the hottest time of day.  Rode through a couple of cooler spots….maybe a 10o or so drop.   I don’t know why that was but it felt absolutely wonderful and I was very grateful.  J
Today’s nomination for best random comment:  We came out of a store and as I was commenting on how nasty the heat and humidity felt, a woman walked by and said…”I gonna get a big ol’ doobie and some beer…then it’ll be okay.”
The KOAs that we’ve stayed at recently have had cabins.  Kim has been curious about them, so this morning as I was making reservations, he wanted me to check out the cost.  Less than a hotel room.  So, our humble abode for the night is a little one room cabin with a bathroom (no shower), regular beds, air conditioning and TV…..the ad did say it was a step above tent camping. Headed to the pool as soon as we got the bikes unloaded.  Didn’t intend to stay long, just wanted to get cooled off….which we did.  Couldn’t rinse off the chlorine as we didn’t have the bathroom code…bathroom code? Really?  Anyway, hot dogs again for supper because that’s what the camp store had.  Wood we bought was so uncooperative that Kim used the air mattress pump to fan it into flames.  When he stopped, so did the flames.  Managed to cook the hot dogs, though, despite the less than desirable conditions.
I got my cycle endorsement in 2010 and initially rode Zac’s Sporty.  I wanted my own bike so at the end of the 2010 riding season, I bought a new 2011 Heritage Softail Classic; named it Pegasus.  This is our 5th riding season together and today Pegasus turned over 60,000 miles.  Those miles translate to a lot of fun and adventure.  J
Crossed into the Central Time Zone somewhere along the way.

Today’s mileage:  228 Miles                 Total mileage:  826 miles
From zero to 60,000 in under 5 years....
