Saturday, March 23....Train, Train (Blackfoot)

No alarm, no phone calls, no jackhammer, no birds pecking to wake us up today.  Left to wake up on our own, we didn’t get up until after 9:30 a.m.!  Appears we were both a little tired.  But then I knew I was...last night while sitting in the trailer writing in the journal my brain hit a wall.  I did fine until I came to the ‘going to the fair’ part of the day...words wouldn’t come.  Then as my fingers were still because my brain was struggling to find the words, I fell asleep in the chair...not once, but twice.  Couldn’t come up with a relevant song title either...best I could do was a generic title.  It wasn’t clever or relevant but just coming up with it took a lot of brain power.
So I was wasted without benefit of alcohol or drugs.😏  A couple of late nights and hours out in the fresh air will eventually do that to a person.  Kim wrapped up his imaging early because of the moonlight; I did the best that I could finishing up the journal and we were in bed shortly after 11.  That makes for about 10 hours of sleep last night.

Didn’t let sleeping late derail us from our walk.  Thankfully the temperature was in the 60’s which is middle of the road out here.  Not too hot but not cold either.  Makes for good walking.  We did our 3 miles in record time also...about 1 hour and 5 minutes.  And we even dawdled along the way by checking out the watering system for the pecan groves...the pumps were on, bringing water up and filling the cement ditches.  There are hoses running from the ditches into the fields and when the water gets high enough it flows through the hoses into the groves.  Yesterday we watched the watering end of the process...today we got to see how the water gets into the ditches to get to the groves.  This is the first time we’ve seen the pumps in action.

Planned a ride to Oracle, home of De Marco’s Pizzeria which is the home of the #1 BLT on my list.  It’s about 60 miles from camp, a little over an hour’s ride.  Unless, of course, there’s some stopping along the way which there was.  But we weren’t on a time schedule...just wanted to be home before dark so Kim could have plenty of time to set up for imaging.  Finished lunch about 3 o’clock and headed back to camp the way we came...SR 79 to Park Link Rd.  Stopped several times along the way because one thing or another caught my eye and I wanted a picture of it.
--------------------
The railroad system is alive and well out in the southwest.  The sound of the nearby trains running is an all day noise...like even through the night.  There are at least two, possibly three in places, tracks that run mostly parallel to I-10 and the frontage road.  Park Link Road comes to a T at the frontage road and there are two sets of tracks running across Park Link.  Today there was a long train sitting on one of the tracks blocking the crossing.  We pulled up, turned the bikes off and waited.  There were others in line ahead of us.  The truck in front of us turned around, the driver stopping to tell us that the guy at the front of the line said he’d had been waiting a half hour already.  Aghh!! Turning around for us meant going 18 miles back to the Tom Mix Highway (SR 79) and then west into Coolidge and south back to camp...a significant amount of miles.
We pulled up at 4:05 and at 4:27 I couldn’t take it anymore.  I turned around to take the long way back to camp.  Moving was preferable to me even though it was back tracking.  Kim was going to wait it out and we joked about who would make it to camp first.  About 11 miles down the road I called him to see if the train had moved yet.  Why, yes, it had...about two minutes after I left.  Figures!  So not only was Kim no longer waiting at the train tracks but he was eating a DQ Blizzard as we spoke. Figures!!  So I turned around yet again to take the shorter route back because I had a mission to accomplish and preferred to do it today instead of tomorrow.  Got lots of U-turn practice today.  😐

So...my plan for looking into the hawk/crow nest on Park Link Road involved my phone, my selfie stick and a stool.  Kim said the selfie stick wasn’t long enough and he was skeptical of using the stool because it wouldn’t get me up high enough.  The stool wouldn’t fit on the bike so whether it would help or not was a moot point...still I persisted.

This didn't work

We stopped by the nest on our way to Oracle.  Indeed the crows were squatters because they were there again today.  Kim is taller and has longer arms so he was the designated selfie stick holder and picture taker.  He was right...the selfie stick wasn’t long enough to look into the nest.  Kim had another suggestion:  My selfie stick connects to my phone via blue-tooth.  So theoretically if the phone was at the end of a longer ‘arm’ and I was holding the selfie stick, I could still get my picture.  That was a big Aha! moment for me...I thought the phone had to be attached to the selfie stick.  Tested Kim’s blue-tooth theory and it worked.  Yay!  So I started planning my next attempt; Kim thought I was going to a lot of effort to look into a crow’s nest but still I persisted.  Perhaps he just didn’t get it.

Inside the nest
My finished product
After the bike ride, I gathered what I needed from camp and headed back in the truck.  Armed with long pieces of wood, tape, selfie stick and phone I was going back to get a picture!  When I stopped the truck one of the birds was sitting in a nearby tree and I could see that it was probably a raven, not a crow.  That thing was big!  Anyway, I taped the sticks together, taped my phone on one end and selfie stick on the other and set out on the short walk to the cactus, hoping like crazy that no one would see me and call some kind of authority.  The nest was about 12 feet up and my stick wasn’t quite long enough...but still I persisted.  Made some adjustments and voila!! I got my picture!
Now the inside of that nest was nothing special...in fact, it looks like the ravens were collecting panty hose and tissues to line it.  No eggs in sight.  But ultimately what was inside the nest wasn’t important...the important thing to me is that I persisted with my idea and made it happen.  😎👍

We like the card game Hand and Foot that we played with Dan and Vickie.  Vickie left 3 decks of cards with us so we could play it if we had the chance.  Well, tonight we had the chance to play because clouds made imaging impossible.  We played two rounds of the game before we realized that there were twenty 7’s...in 3 decks of cards there should only be 12 of any particular card.  Looks like we’re going to have to invest in some decks of cards before we resume our game. 😃
