Monday, March 16...Motorcycle Mama (Neil Young)

My mom reported that her flight was fairly full and included a couple of younger kids.  No coughing, no sneezing and no crying on the kids’ part.  She wiped down the seat, armrests, food tray and buckle on the seat belt. A woman nearby expressed relief that she wasn’t the only one taking those precautions.  No one wore a face mask either.

Kim was up until 3:30 a.m. or so...Marilyn was up and trying to sneak out of the trailer about 7:30 a.m.  I say trying because she couldn’t figure out the door handle. Sneaking is most effective when you don’t make any noise. I was awake so I mumbled the instructions and away she went.  I got up and we were out walking on the road before 8 o’clock.  Early morning walks are not a bad way to start the day.

Willie and Ann left today for Ajo, AZ...maybe 80 miles southwest of here.  They’re going to do some hiking in Organ Pipe National Monument tomorrow.  It was fun sharing time and space with them for a few days.
--------------------
Kim has mentioned that we need to start taking our bike rides earlier in the day to avoid the downward trek of the sun.  The sun is killer on the eyes when riding at about the 5 o’clock time frame.  Anyway, my mom said she was game to get on the bike so today was the day.  First we had a little fun with a staged photo op...she put on my chaps, jacket and her helmet and we all struck the badass pose in front of the bikes. Kim then gave her a tutorial on what to and not to do....they did a practice run getting on and off the bike. Then it was getting down to the real business of riding.  Didn’t want to overdo it on the first ride because if it was too much maybe she wouldn’t want to do it anymore.   So we opted for the Park Link/Tom Mix Highway loop.
Stopped at Tom Mix to stretch our legs...she took off her helmet and said, “This is fun!  I’m doing fine and anytime you want to go, I’m ready.”  She 84 years old and took her first motorcycle ride today.  Yeehaw!! 😃 So glad she enjoyed it because bike rides and truck rides are about what we have left to do with daily changes in the COVID-19 restrictions.  Life is in a type of lockdown mode ut so far riding the bikes isn’t on the prohibited list.  As long as the weather is agreeable we’ll be getting out on the bikes daily.  Great way to alleviate the boredom of just sitting around.

The Tom Mix log book has been removed due to COVID-19....a sign was attached to the table explaining its absence.  Not gonna lie...I thought it was a bit extreme until I remembered there was an ink pen in the box for people to sign the log.  Must be that Dick, the log master, is making sure the ink pen is not responsible for spreading the virus. Makes sense now.

Tom Mix Monument was a busy place today.  We sat on a picnic table in the shade of a small pavilion. Noticed a masterful piece of graffiti on a nearby table.  It had some parts missing but I’ll do my best to record it here:  Saturday, the 22nd of September 2012.  Our ’97 Ford Taurus overheated, leaving 4 of us on the side of the road from noon to ??  in horrible heat.  No one stopped. So after being in the heat for so long we started to get hungry.  With no wildlife around and no hunting licenses or weapons in our possession, the 3 biggest ganged up on the smallest one.  Needless to say the 3 were no longer hungry.
OK, truthfully, being stranded with no food for a long time with no one stopping is true.  The rest is Bull*#&= !
Very creative and it made all of us laugh. 😄
--------------------
Every time we’ve ridden past the motorcycle sculpture on the Leaping Lizard driveway (Tom Mix highway) it’s been in a different position...parallel to the road, perpendicular to the road and diagonal to the road.  Couldn’t imagine somebody going out there to move it manually so I told Kim that I suspected it was a weathervane.  Today it was verified; I could see that the ‘back tire’ was a metal ring with ‘wind cups’ attached to it and it was spinning in the wind.  The rotation of the back tire was causing the bike to move sideways ever so slightly.  I’d put that on my roof...I like things that spin in the wind.
--------------------
We took steaks out of the freezer for supper.  Ate a late breakfast before we left and rode into Eloy about 3 o’clock.  Perfect opportunity to introduce Marilyn to Hot Dogs Alvarado.  So that’s two new things for her in one day: motorcycling and the best hot dogs ever.  She’s a fan of both. 👍  However, due to the timing of the hot dogs we decided to put the steaks on hold until tomorrow night.  Hard to believe we passed up steaks for hot dogs. 😋

Kim read today that Tulip Time has been cancelled for the first time in 91 years. Wow! It makes total sense in light of trying to slow down the spread of the coronavirus but it’s hard to imagine the financial impact that decision will have on the community. That’s just one event that I’m very familiar with as it was a part of my high school career; that same scenario is playing out all across the country. 😦
