Thursday, March 1...Sloop John B

That bed last night felt so-o-o good…the stress of the day just melted off as I snuggled down in the warmth of it. Kim woke up at 7 this morning, but it was just too early for me so I stayed in bed and drifted in and out until almost 8.  Then I was ready to greet the day feeling totally refreshed.

9:30 a.m….Checked the truck and found no puddles underneath...Yay!๐Ÿ‘
Headed into Quartzsite where we found a campground that would take us…some places down here will only accept an actual RV with an onboard bathroom and that's not us, so we're not an RV...but we're not a tent either. We’re really sort of our own category. ๐Ÿ˜  Anyway, we have our home away from home set up for a few days and we’re ready to sit back and enjoy…get on the bikes and enjoy…talk to our neighbors and enjoy…whatever comes our way and enjoy.
70 degrees and sunny!
We unfolded the air mattress and discovered the first order of business was taking off the zip off mattress pad because it was soaked.  We'd left the air mattress with the mattress cover still attached folded up in the trailer over the winter and I guess that wasn't good.  Lesson learned from this: next winter, the mattress will be stored in the basement with the mattress pad taken off…less chance of condensation issues which lead to wet issues...which lead to possible mold issues...which all lead to smelly issues.  Took the mattress pad off to be washed, wiped down the mattress and while waiting for the wash to finish, we tended to the next important item: hooking up the speakers so we can listen to music.  That’s a new addition this year…and much appreciated by both of us.  And after the wash is done, we’re heading out for a ride because the sun is shining and there are open roads to ride.

The right blinker on our trailer is not functioning properly…Kim wanted to buy a multi-tester to check the electrical hook ups.  There’s a Wal-Mart in Parker, 35 miles away. I’m not a Wal-Mart fan , but I am a big fan of a 70 mile ride on a warm sunny afternoon. We were heading north on 95 about
Ready to rock n roll!
10 miles out of town when Kim came on the communicator and said, “Now tell me…how good does this feel?”  Let me see…it’s 71o and I’m cruising along on Zeus without a jacket, listening to music with the wind in my face and the sun on my back.  Saying it felt good didn’t seem adequate but yeah, it..felt..good! ๐Ÿ˜Š
And it was sort of funny that before leaving the campground each of us had to get reacquainted with how to do things on our bikes.  I had had some minor issues with my sound and navigation system at the end of last riding season…the nav system issue wasn’t as important as full functionality of the sound system.  Over the winter I had some service done and mentioned the sound controller issue...mainly that the forward and backward function wasn’t working.  It was assumed that updating the system would fix the problem.   And by golly, it did, which gave me great joy!
Kim is still mulling over the trailer blinker problem…with the testing he’s done, he’s thinking it might be a truck wiring problem.  He’s scheming about a work around but really needs full daylight to attempt anything.  He has his dad’s knack for coming up with uncommon solutions.

The night is clear and I think I’ve seen more stars tonight than I’ve seen in the last 4 months back home. However the moon is heading on full, so Kim will be waiting until we get to Picacho to get the telescopes out.  A full moon is Nature’s version of light pollution.

Kim had on a Badlands Harley shirt today…a man in Wal-Mart mentioned it in passing.  As we were walking out of the store, we see a gentleman checking out our bikes…it was the man from inside the store.  He owns a Softail Classic, so we talked bikes, bike trips, etc. for a while.  Then he said as much as he likes his bike, his favorite toy (my word) is his boat…his 40 foot sailboat. His biggest undertaking so far has been a solo run from California to Hawaii.  Took 14 days to get there and 17 to get back.   What?!  His wife said it was a race so I suppose there were other people in other boats but it’s not like you’re all hanging around together.  Seriously? California to Hawaii?…that’s a lot of open water!  And if you don’t have it with you, you aren’t gonna get it because there wouldn’t be a quick trip to the store for it.  Our bike trip to Alaska took us 42 days and we rode almost 10,000 miles but we were on roads…ground…terra firma.  The scenery was ever changing, there were towns along the way, people to meet and again, there was always something solid underneath us. As we’re listening to the man, I’m shuddering just thinking about such a trip and Kim seems ready to sign up for the next one.  Well, not quite because he’s not a boater but he thinks a trip like would be such a rush.  Kim and I are so similar and yet so different. ๐Ÿ˜

Back in October we joined Weight Watchers again.  We’d had success with it several years before but fell away from the basic principles of it and gained some of the weight back. For me, it’s really a matter of readjusting my approach to food…the why, when, what and how much.  And so far I’ve found it much easier to stick to the program when I’m at home than when I travel.  We’ve talked about how to manage meals during 6 weeks away from home.  It hasn’t been easy so far while out on the road, but now that we’re camping we hope to eat out less and cook more in camp.  And that's why the bicycles came out with us...we plan on getting out on them in the mornings.  Yep, it's definitely going to be a challenge.
