Friday, February 16…The Sore Feet Song (Ally Kerr)

I put the bird feeders up today…two hummingbird feeders and the seed ring feeder.  Within two hours, several hummers were flitting around camp, chirping at each other.  Cardinals came to the seedfeeder last year, but it took a couple of days.  Also watched some lizards playing on the tree today. Well, I say playing but they were probably on the prowl for some insects or something.  There was a section of tree bark that was pulled away from the tree; one of the lizards kept darting under and out from the bark and one time when it appeared, I was sure I saw something in his mouth. Or perhaps it was just my imagination, because do lizards carry their food around or do they eat it as soon as they catch it? I suppose I could Google it, but that’s too much effort right now.

Last night I bought a new Fitbit.  The time on my Charge 3 hadn’t changed since we left home, but it was no big deal since I thought I’d sync it to my phone once we arrived in Arizona. Get it back to telling me the correct time again instead making me do the math.  But it wouldn’t sync…I tried a reset but that didn’t work either.  Compounding the problem was the fact that I got a new phone a couple of months ago.  So instead of arguing with the 3 year-old  Fitbit about how it needed to play nice with my new phone, I replaced it.  Problem solved.

This morning, I told Kim I was going to throw my old Fitbit away.  He gets all Mr. Fix-it about it and said let him see if he could factory reset it before I tossed it.  Oh, sure, now you want to do that…after I buy a new one?  And why?  Why do we need to keep it when I have a functional watch now?”   Bakker determination took hold and, in my opinion, he spent way too much time figuring out how to reset a watch that we don’t need. But, hey! He has the satisfaction of knowing he did it, right?

I was sitting in the camper this morning after I lowered the ramp to let the sunshine in.  Sitting here, basking in the warmth with my eyes closed, I became aware of the many layers of sound that are a part of our Picacho experience. The ever-present traffic noise from out on I-10, the constant and delightful chirping of birds, the occasional train, and the neighborhood rooster that crows every few minutes throughout the day.  All of it, even the trains, are comforting.

Last year, I walked too fast during the Shamrock Run in Marana and my knee rebelled against me shortly thereafter. It took months before I was able to walk without a slight limp…I bought a couple of braces, I used heat, and I used ice, which I’m sure helped but time was the best healer.  Wearing a brace, I continued to do shorter, slower walks. Any amount of walking is better than no walking, right?  However, I believe it was new ‘barefoot’ type shoes I bought, coupled with walking on the pavement that was responsible for a dandy case of plantar fasciitus in the midst of the knee healing phase. Turns out happy feet are very necessary to any amount of walking. Talk about rubbing salt in a wound.  Anyway, Dr. Scholl’s inserts to the eventual rescue on the heel pain and I was looking forward to getting back to walking when we got to Arizona.  However, this respiratory shit that’s been plaguing me has also zapped my energy.  The very thought of walking this morning made me tired.  So, I didn’t.  I sat in the sunshine, I watched the bird feeders, watched two lizards run up and down the tree, did some felting, and painted a rock.  I told myself I was doing something, but it sure felt like I was doing nothing.

Then I opened today’s devotional reading from Jesus Calling.  It started out with this paragraph:

Thank Me for the conditions that are requiring you to be still.  Do not spoil these quiet hours by wishing them away, waiting impatiently to be active again.  Some of the greatest works in My Kingdom have been done from sick beds and prison cells. Instead of resenting the limitations of a weakened body, search for My way in the midst of these very circumstances.”

Okay, that was fairly specific, wasn’t it?

This afternoon it was 73o and sunny, so we jumped on the bikes to ride the Tom Mix Loop. I wanted

Picacho Peak behind us
to check out the saguaro nest on Park Link Rd.; it stayed empty the entire time we were here last year, but maybe this year would be different.  Nothing visible sitting on the nest as of today but I’ll keep checking.

Probably 15 miles of Park Link’s 18-mile length is open range for cattle.  We’ve been stopped by the herd crossing the road a time or two…on bikes and in the truck. When they decide to cross or stop in the road, there’s nothing to do but wait it out.  Today, there was a dead cow in one of the turnouts along the road.  As I passed it, I thought, “Shoot, that had to have schmucked up some vehicle but good!”  I got on the radio to see if Kim concurred with my assumption. “That’s a good possibility.  It sure did stink, didn’t it?!”  I didn’t smell a thing…one of the positives of having a stuffy head, I suppose.

There are two new traffic signals on Hwy 87 from Eloy to Coolidge…the one at Houser Rd is operational and one at Hanna Rd is not.  They are both in the vicinity of the prisons.

Kim set his scope up today in hopes of imaging.  It was clear all day but about dusk a few high thin clouds rolled in.  Normally that would be a deterrent to staying out there, but since there’s a slight learning curve on the new equipment, he’ll do what he can to familiarize himself with it.  And maybe, just maybe, the clouds will move on and all will be good.

We’re both really enjoying the extra room we gained by going with a table and chairs in the living area of the camper, but three things about that: 1. The folding chairs, even though they are cushioned, are not as comfy long term as the couch cushions were, 2. It’s impossible to lay down on a folding chair if one wants to catch a quick snooze and 3. Kim keeps hitting his head on the shelf because it’s accessible for such a thing now.  So, 1. A chair pillow of some kind is in order, 2. I either fight through the urge to nap or go lay on the bed and 3. Kim wears his helmet in the camper to protect his head. 😏
