Friday, April 5...Home (October)

On the road by 9:30 a.m. heading to Ludington to have lunch with my mom.  Cruising into Michigan by 11 a.m.  Yay!👍
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Oops!  Not so fast...when we passed through Holland, Kim wondered if I wanted to stop and see Aunt Butch.  She’s his dad’s oldest sister, lives less than a mile from the highway, and Kim always wants to stop when he’s in the area.  So we did.  Spent about an hour with her and it was good to see that’s she just as feisty as ever.  And it’s probably more fun because she’s feisty at 95.  Ninety-five!  She doesn’t hear everything and is a little shorter but not much else has changed.  Same house, same hospitality, same explosive laugh.  Our lunch date now became a late lunch date but I called my mom and it was no problem.  I’m glad so we stopped to see Aunt Butch...Kim had a smile on his face the entire time. 😃
--------------------
I checked on Jack’s walk across the country and it’s the last time it will be recorded in the journal.  I intend to keep checking in on him.  I feel involved somehow.
It’s hard to know where he’s heading because his Live Track shows his actual route is different than his stated planned route. Must assume that he knows what he’s doing...100 days or less is his goal not mine.  Anyway, he’s heading towards Carlsbad, NM.  AND on April 4th, he recorded his 2 millionth stop.  2,000,000 steps!!!  He‘s been taking a picture every day of the stats on Fitbit and posting it to his blog.  I think Fitbit owes him a sponsorship or something.  That’s a lot of publicity right there.
--------------------
Good to get home.  Enjoyed my month away but it’s time to get back to my life.  Looking forward to continuing my walking, also.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drove about 370 miles today to get home!

Arizona 2019 travel stats:
Total travel mileage there and back:  4803 miles
Days away from Michigan winter: 40 days

Thursday, April 4...Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder)

Got up and on the road by 9 a.m.  Not much happening at this stage of our drive home except for the side trip to Waddy, Ky, to see the new kid on the block.
--------------------
Made it to Marshal’s about 12:30, laden with lots of diapers and wipes.  Our welcome to the world present for little Charlie....and her parents.  Also brought a couple boxes of Little Debbie snack cakes for her older brothers and sister.  It’s fun to be the grandparents. 😊
--------------------
The Kentucky Bakkers were sitting out on their porch when we arrived...all but Shelby and Susan (Callie’s mom).  They were upstairs trying to take a nap.  Charlie was soundly sleeping in her momma’s arms when we got there.  Then she slept in Grampa’s arms and then in Gramma’s arms.  There was some stretching, baby noises and repositioning but she kept sleeping.  Even through the pictures with her noisy brothers and sister.
Grampa pushed the boys on the backyard swings as only Grampa can do...he’s definitely the preferred swing pusher.  Shelby is infatuated with her little sister...for now. When she saw me holding Charlie, she climbed up on the porch swing to sit beside us and just rested her hand on her sister’s back.  Like she was the one taking care of the baby.  And when I asked Clayton if we could take Charlie home with us, his answer was a very emphatic “No, that’s our baby from my momma’s tummy.  You can’t take her.”  Dylan really didn’t say much about Charlie...he was more interested in playing.  So it seems that the older siblings don’t mind the addition of the rookie.
--------------------
I realize that the first couple of weeks of a baby’s life there’s a lot of facial changes happening.  I could see that Charlie already looked different than those initial “She’s here!” pictures of three days ago.  So there are things I want to note here about her right now because they could be different in a week: #1. Her cheeks are not nearly as big as her first picture made them look, #2. As I was holding her I saw a real resemblance to her cousin Grady, #3. She has a good amount of dark hair, and #4. She has tiny flat to her head ears and big hands.  She is perfect in every way!!
--------------------
Kim held the camera while Dylan merrily pushed the button to take pictures.  Then with a big smile on his face he said, “Gramma, I took a hundred a thousands of pictures.”  I quickly looked at them when we got in the truck and question whether any of them will escape the delete button.  But I’ll reserve final judgment until I see them on the computer.
Clayton had to see what Dylan was doing
--------------------
Left Marshal’s about 4 p.m. to head north.  Not going to make it all the way home tonight...we’re hoping to make it as far as my mom’s in Ludington.  Might be a midnight arrival, though....and if we can’t make it all that way, we’ll grab a room.
--------------------
Ran into rain in Indianapolis...up to this point the weather has been sunny and warm...in the mid-70’s in Waddy, KY, when we left.  At 8 p.m. it’s rainy and chilly...down to 47o.  Wherever we wake up in the morning I’ll be putting my jeans on, I’m sure.  And socks...can’t forget the socks.
--------------------
We’ve seen many construction sites along the way but I haven’t been able to catch sight of any names on the traffic cones.  Still a curiosity thing for me.
--------------------
I’ve been fielding work calls the whole time we’ve been gone, telling people to give me a call back in April.  So now they are.  Almost time to start paying the price for taking a month off. 😐
--------------------
It’s 9 p.m. and we’re in a hotel room in Peru, Indiana...at least I think that’s where we are.  First we ran into an hour long stop-n-go slow down between Louisville and Indy...then there was the rain north of Indy...then it started raining harder as darkness fell.  Just not great driving conditions in general...and even worse when you’re road weary.  Since we wouldn’t get to my mom’s until well after midnight we decided to give ourselves a break and just get a room.  We can stop to see my mom tomorrow.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the map we made less than 400 miles today...but we got to see the KY WonderKids so it’s all good.

Wednesday, April 3...The Price You Pay (Emmylou Harris)

Started the day with some unintended humor:
Our room last night was on the 2nd floor....set the alarm so we could get on the road at a decent time.  Hotel had free breakfast so we started off with that.  Got on the elevator and I pushed the 1st floor button...doors closed and we stood there, side by side, waiting.  Kim quietly said, “You know we might actually move if you push a floor button instead of the ‘door closed’ button.”  Oops!! 😏
--------------------
On the road by 8:30 a.m....heading out of Oklahoma City on US 44 East, which was the Toll Road from Hell on last year’s trip.  But this year we were prepared...plenty of coins and a $10 bill.  Our only other cash was a $100 bill and no way, no how was that being used.
The 1st toll was coins only, no attendant, cost was $2.65...throw it in the bin.  The 2nd toll was coins only, no attendant, cost was $2.65...throw it in the bin. The 3rd toll had an attendant, cost was $2.65, give her the $10 bill, get change...Yes, we are on a roll!!  The 4th toll was $11.65...and a sign tells us that “No bills higher than $20 accepted.”  Oh, shit, we’ve only got a hundred dollar bill.  Frantically counting bills and coins to come up with $11.65...can’t do it. Pull up to the attendant’s booth and Kim says “We only have a $100 bill”, pointing at the sign about the allowed limit.  Attendant waved her hand and said, “No problem...don’t pay attention to that sign.  We don’t care.”  Whew!!  Another toll booth drive through crime averted.
--------------------
Just got a text saying that Baby Girl Bakker has an actual name...Charlotte JoAnn Bakker.  “Charlie Jo” for short.  Yesss, oh, yesss!!!  That’s all I got to say about that for now!!😃
--------------------
Temperature was in the 70’s for most of the day and the sunshine was constant.  It was a shorts wearing day again.  Man, am I going to miss that!  I’m anxious to get home but not so anxious for the cool temperatures I’ve been hearing about...that means wearing jeans again.  I’m not so hardy that I can wear shorts in 40 degree weather.  Agh!
--------------------
I took a turn at driving today...more to give Kim a break than anything else.  Got behind the wheel after lunch and drove for maybe an hour or so until we needed fuel.  At that point we were about 65 miles from St. Louis...I was willing to keep driving but said that we’d need to switch again before we got to city traffic. I’m not experienced enough at pulling a trailer to feel comfortable in rush hour traffic in an unfamiliar city.   He was grateful for the short break that he’d gotten and took back over at that point.
--------------------
Not much going on today but driving.  We have a goal of getting to Kentucky tomorrow and had over 800 miles to go when we woke up this morning.  That meant no Roadside America stops.  In fact, I didn’t even look at the app because I knew I’d be a bit peevish knowing what fun and unusual stuff we were passing up.  It’s easier on both of us if I’m not aware....pouting is not an attractive look for someone my age. 😐
--------------------
Stopped about 8:30 p.m. in Evansville, IN.  Hope to get up at a decent time again. It always sounds so doable at night but it sure is a struggle in the morning.  The time changes are starting to catch up with me.  Almost back to normal time on the clock but my body clock is still adjusting.  Probably take another few days of walking through the day like a zombie before my body figures it out.  I’m looking forward to longer daylight hours though.
--------------------
Little Miss Charlie
We are pushing onward to Kentucky to say ‘Hello, sweet baby’ to Miss Charlotte JoAnn.  Unbeknownst to me, Callie had been talking about the name Charlotte for some months now. Marshal told me today that he wasn’t a fan until it was paired with JoAnn...which was Grandma Bakker’s middle name.  Then he was on board.
And unbeknownst to either of them, Charlie was the nickname I was going to give the baby if he/she was born on my birthday.   Marshal called maybe on March 29th or 30th  to let me know that there wasn’t a baby yet but that just meant that my birthday was still a possibility...I told him at that time the name I had picked out.  “Interesting,” was all he said.  Even though I didn’t use it for any of my children, Charlie is a name I have adored since I was a little girl.  In fact, the first car I owned received the honor of being named Charlie.
Then when 8 year old Ashlyn saw the baby’s picture she said “She looks like a Charlotte to me” without knowing that Aunt Callie and Uncle Marshal had even been considering that name.
I don’t know if the rest of the family will call her by her proper name, but I’m going to be calling her Charlie.  And yes, her mom and dad already know that. 😎
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drove about 670 miles today...on the road about 12 hours

Tuesday, April 2...What’s Your Name (Lynyrd Skynyrd)

So we woke up to a dead truck battery this morning.  Aghh!  Left something plugged in and turned on in the truck last night...certainly won’t do that again!  But thanks to Stanley, the portable charge-all thingy, Kim got it started.  Yay!!
--------------------
If anyone is travelling through Carrizozo, NM, and needs a comfortable, clean and relatively inexpensive motel to crash at because they’re tired and should get off the road, I heartily recommend the Four Winds Motel.  Pillows were a bit too fluffy for me but I made it work.
--------------------
Set the alarm for 6:30 a.m., showered and ready to go by about 7:40 but the truck not starting...well, that was a little delay to the whole getting on the road early plan.  And then there was the burro finding expedition...then there was breakfast at a local diner.  As I was getting out of the truck for another burro picture, I told Kim that I would not be asking to stop by the Cadillac Ranch as we get near Amarillo, that he was being more than gracious about my burro curiosity and that that would be enough...for today, at least. 😏
--------------------
Z.....the Super Burro!
I didn’t have to go far to get my first picture of a painted burro.  There was a BBQ shack in the parking lot of the Four Winds Motel right next to our truck and a super hero burro was standing guard over it.  From there we drove through town on my burro quest.  Carrizozo isn’t very large so the driving part didn’t take long but there were a number of very cleverly painted burros so the picture taking part took a bit longer.  Also saw a tree full of vultures and some tulips in bloom.
--------------------
It was 34o in Carrizozo at 7:30 a.m.!  Thirty-four cold degrees!! Back to wearing jeans, two shirts and socks.👎  Temperature did rise quickly though...by 9:30 it was 56o.  And it got a little warm when the sun came in the windshield but that was remedied by turning the air on low.
---------------------
Driving north on US 54 up to Santa Rosa is a wide open country experience.  Occasionally we’d pass the remnants of a town or maybe a town that was giving mixed messages...more closed up storefronts than open, plenty of motels, a few cafes, a spread out residential area and no visible means of industry (Vaughn).  Not even a Dollar General.  Most small towns out here have a Dollar General or a Family Dollar, sometimes both. Anyway, US 54 is not a populated route...just miles of road through hundreds or thousands of acres of fenced in pasture.  Cows and old time windmills round out the picture.

--------------------
The 4th KY WonderKid made her appearance today at about 10:30 a.m., coming out at 22” in length and weighing 9 lbs., 10 oz.  Marshal and Callie didn’t know what they were having but they were thinking it was a boy, so they had a boy name picked out.  They were a little surprised by the girl-ness of the baby and as of yet, she doesn’t have a name.  By all accounts, mom and Baby are doing well.  As of 2 o’clock I hadn’t heard what her siblings think of the new arrival.
That makes a total of 15 grandkids for Kim and me...5 from his kids and 10 from mine.
--------------------
After a stop at The Curio Teepee in Tucumcari, NM, I couldn’t take the heat of my jeans any more.  I went into the trailer to change into shorts and take my socks off.  That made the rest of the day a very comfortable ride with the sun coming in the cab.  Temperature through the Texas Panhandle was in the 70’s.
--------------------
It is with great dismay that I report that the Kmart in Tucumcari has closed.  We stayed at the Tucumcari KOA on our Final Four ride back in the fall of 2015 and when we asked about shopping we were directed to the Kmart in town.  It’s the smallest Kmart in the country we were told and we believed it.  It wasn’t a big K store...it was one of the original Kmart stores and we didn’t know whether it was truly the smallest in the country or not.  Didn’t matter to us...it had what we needed and it was fun to think that it was one of a kind, a holdover from days gone by.  But now it’s boarded up and for sale. 😧
--------------------
A few days ago when I talked to Marshal, the baby wasn’t showing any sign of wanting to leave its happy place.  So we left it that we would stop in Kentucky to see the baby and his/her older siblings if the big event happened while we were enroute; otherwise we would boogie on home.  Yesterday afternoon I got a text saying that we should just plan on stopping at their house.  Several more texts were exchanged and we went to bed expecting our sleep to be interrupted by a phone call from Marshal.  So when the phone rang this morning while I was still in bed and Kim was in the shower, I threw back the covers and sprinted for the phone, only to find that it was the cleaners telling me that I had a “crap load” of work waiting for me.  No baby but lots of work.  Great! Can I go back to bed now?
--------------------
Talked to Marshal this evening...told him we probably wouldn’t be there until Thursday.  He joked that maybe the baby would have a name by that time.  I have been telling them right along that if the baby was born on my birthday I was going to come up with my own name for it...it would be my special nickname for him/her.  I might still do that if they don’t hurry up with a name...and I'm kind of partial to the name I choose. 😏
--------------------
So much of this ride across Texas is familiar to me...wind turbines, little town names, stockyards, landmarks.  This is our 4th or 5th time through here; I’m able to look out at the countryside more than Kim who usually drives.  It’s all part of being a passenger on a 2,000+ mile trip.  We’ve taken different routes into and out of Oklahoma City but driving across the top of Texas is the quickest way through that state.
--------------------
Cruised in the Central Time Zone in Texas so we’re one hour closer to normal time now.
--------------------
In Yukon, OK, for the night...just outside Oklahoma City.
--------------------
Random conversation of the day:
We finally bought a cord that would allow us to listen to my iPod...radio stations haven’t been the most reliable.  It’s a common occurrence for me to sing along with the songs, lip sync or hum my way through a song.  Music is not a passive experience for me.
Today we were in need of fuel and take an exit that has a somewhat confusing turn onto the overpass.  Kim was struggling with the sun’s reflection in all available mirrors while waiting for the light to change and I was humming with a Billy Joel song waiting for the chorus so I could then full out sing along.  Just as the light changes and Kim starts to turn, the music for the chorus starts.  I’m in my own little world and start singing the music with a ‘wah...wah...wah’ which causes Kim to think that he’s going into the wrong lane so he quickly turns the wheel to go toward the lane on the other side of the cement island which never would have worked for our rig.  As this is happening this conversation is taking place:
Kim: “What?! I’m not doing this right? Where am I supposed to go?"
Me: “No, you were doing that right....wait, you can’t turn there, that won’t work....just go straight now.  You were doing fine until you second guessed yourself.”
Kim:  “I didn’t second guess myself until you started saying wha...wha...wha!  Then I thought Shit, I’m doing this wrong.”
Me:  “I didn’t say anything.”
Kim:  “You did, too...you made that wha...wha...wha sound like I was doing something wrong.  Like I shouldn’t turn there.”
Me:  “I wasn’t telling you not to turn there....I was singing, Kim!”😐

The timing was perfect for a misunderstanding that produced a bit of frustration and then a whole lot of laughter after we explained ourselves.  Like I had to explain that I was singing “wah...wah...wah” and not saying “wha...wha...wha”.  There is a difference.😏
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drove about 540 miles today...on the road for maybe 10 ½ hours.

Monday, April 1...Hit the Road, Jack (Ray Charles)

Both phones rang early this morning...mine first, then Kim’s.  Up and moving about 7:15 a.m.
--------------------
Today was packing and leaving day.  The longer we’re in the trailer the less inclined we are to keep everything in its place.  We started out being very diligent about putting items away and keeping the floor open.  For example: all our extra footwear was kept in the truck; I’d get my walking shoes out in the morning and put them away when done with ‘em.  But today it became apparent that we’d gotten a little less diligent in the past few days. Dealing with that extra stuff didn’t add much to the cleanup time...it just pointed out our bad habits.
--------------------
On the road at 10:30 a.m...but we put a deposit down for Lot #35 for next February 24.  Adding a week on the front end of our trip.  And who knows...maybe we’ll add a week to the back end , too.
--------------------
The truck clock was still on Michigan un-Daylight Saving Time, meaning it was an hour behind Michigan but two hours ahead of Arizona.  It usually wasn’t an issue.  New Mexico is in the same time zone as Arizona but it observes Daylight Saving Time.  We jumped ahead an hour crossing the state line but our phones weren’t changing and suddenly the truck time became an issue.  Luckily I knew what to do with the phones; I went into settings and reversed what we’d done on March 10, time change day.  Then I jumped the truck clock ahead an hour so it was on the current Michigan time.  All timepieces are on the same page...sort of.
--------------------
Not much happening today...no walking, no riding and no April Fools jokes. 😎 Just driving..driving..driving.  At Las Cruces, NM, we turned onto US 70 then split off in a northern direction on US 54, heading for Santa Rosa.  Planned on hopping on I-40 at that point.
--------------------
Thought we’d have to stay on the road another couple of hours to make it all the way to Santa Rosa for a room.  The road we’re on is in wide open country...no towns.  Surprise!  Suddenly we were in a little town called Carrizozo.  And look! There’s a couple of motels. So even though it was only 7:40 p.m., we stopped at the Four Winds Motel to see about a room.  There was only one truck in the parking lot but we figured if they were mysteriously filled up we could always head across the street to the Carrizozo Inn...it had newly remodeled rooms. 😏  We were in a room at the Four Winds before 8 o’clock.  Good to be out of the truck.
--------------------
We drove into Carrizozo at early dusk...hard to tell what the town was really about except that there were painted donkeys on top of numerous buildings.  Interesting!  So I decided to do a Google search on the town...did donkeys figure into its past somehow?  Wikipedia didn’t give me any information about the donkey statues but it did have this to say about the name Carrizozo:
The name of the town is derived from the Spanish vernacular for reed grass (Carrizo), which grew significantly in the area and provided excellent feed for ranch cattle. The additional 'zo' at the end of the town name was added to indicate an abundance of Carrizo grass. The town is now often referred to as 'Zozo.
And also this:
Carrizozo is a town in Lincoln CountyNew Mexico and is the county seat with a population of 996 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1899, the town provided the main railroad access for Lincoln County, and the town experienced significant population growth in the early decades of the 1900s. However, with declining relevance of the railroad, the population of the town has gradually declined. The town is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 54 and U.S. Route 380.
------
However, I searched some more and on newmexico.org I found an article about the donkeys...ah, burros.
An attempt to entice travelers into exploring Carrizozo’s art spaces has grown into a Tularosa Basin phenomenonWarren and Joan Malkerson, expat Minnesotans, turned their sights to this little town southeast of Socorro in 2005 and invested in a “herd” of aluminum burros. They invited local artists to paint the beasts, then set them outside businesses, along the roads, and atop a few buildings. Motorists who noticed them stopped into the couple’s Tularosa Basin Gallery of Photography and their Gallery 408. A feeding frenzy followed. “We’ve sold more than 400 of the painted burros,” Warren says. “They’re in more than 30 states.” Nearly every Lincoln County artist has painted one, including some fourth graders who had a field day with Mondrian blocks and Pollock splatters. Besides strengthening the region’s artistic appeal, the burros (selling for $500–$1,300 apiece) help animal-rescue efforts and challenge Malkerson to fit them into buyers’ cars. He especially likes watching each one leave, burro head placidly peering out of the trunk.
Small town pride...gotta love it!! I think a drive around town to check out the burros is in order before we hit the road tomorrow morning.

Drove 452 miles today...on the road about 8 hours.

Today's route....

Sunday, March 31...Wake Up, Little Suzy (Everly Brothers)

It’s not unusual for us to be up until midnight (sometimes way later for Kim)...and I’ve been waking up fairly consistently in the 7 to 7:15 a.m. range.  I don’t always get out of bed but I’m awake.  Of course, back home that translates to going to bed at 3 a.m. and waking up at 10 a.m.  It’s going to be an adjustment, that’s for sure. Will need to start our days before 10 o’clock, that’s for sure.
--------------------
There are several pipe/water issues around the camp...one of them being right beside our camp.  Ryan had been waiting for business to slow down because the water needs to be turned off for the duration of the repair.  Turning off the water in a campground full of people is a sure way to get bombarded with complaints.  But today was the day...water would be shut off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Notes stating that were taped to the door of every camper and Felicia reminded everyone she saw “Get your shower and use the bathroom before 10.”
Kim offered to help Ryan fix the water issue and I went to church. 👍
--------------------
No walk today.  Wanted to make sure to get a shower before the water was turned off.  Then it was just too darn hot later in the day.  Probably just an excuse but it worked for me at the time.
--------------------
March is going out like a lamb out here in Arizona...all week the daytime temperatures have been in the 80’s and the sun has been shining.  Sometimes the nights turn cloudy and get a little cool...mostly in comparison to the day temps but also because I refuse to wear pants except when I’m on the bike.  Some evenings when the temperature drops a bit my legs could benefit from me not being so stubborn on that issue. 😏
--------------------
If I were able to give advice to a younger me, I’d say “Take better care of your upper arms.  When you’re 60 they’ll jiggle and you won’t like that.  Do what you can now to minimize the jiggle later. Trust me on this one!”
--------------------
Kim and Ryan were working on the pipes until about 2:15 p.m....only a few minutes longer than expected.  So far no leaks.
--------------------
I went for a solo ride again today.  Had to pick up some stuff in Coolidge and took the long way around.  Park Link Rd is open again...they paved maybe 3 miles of it and patched up some big potholes.  So I took Park Link to the Tom Mix Hwy into Florence...than 287 to Coolidge.  Then buzzed on back the usual way.  It was a nice day for a ride.
--------------------
Today is my birthday and I was out riding because of one of the best gifts ever.  I was a passenger on Pearl, the bike that Jeff and I rode together.  I didn’t need to know how to ride at that point. In 2010 after Jeff died, I wanted to keep riding but didn’t know how to go about it on my own.  The kids gave me a 3 day motorcycle riding course for my birthday which enabled me to get my cycle endorsement.  Nine years later that gift continues to give me joy every time I get on my bike. 😎
--------------------
Kim made me a steak dinner and then as a surprise had a cake and balloons up at the clubhouse.  It was an impromptu party with Ryan, Felicia, Ozias and Jodie.
--------------------
We head out tomorrow.  And yes, I’m going to miss the sense of connection with this little transient community.  We started out our stay not knowing the camp had new owners.  That brought with it a bit of anxiety but we had nothing to worry about.  Ryan and Felicia are on-site owners and they interact with their campers on a daily basis.  They’re in the process of putting their own stamp on the camp...Felicia has already painted the clubhouse interior and has plans to expand the store and change the clubhouse around a bit.  There are also some exterior changes they want to make.  Their 6 year old son Ozias has multiple sets of ‘grandparents’ in the camp...he hangs out with them or the campers with kids and everyone seems to watch out for him.  The campground has a family feel to it now.  Not saying that Frankie and Jerry weren’t friendly or interacted...just saying that there’s a different feel about the camp with Ryan, Felicia and Ozias on board.
--------------------
I checked on Jaxwalk.com to see how far Jack has made it in his cross country walking journey.  He’s in New Mexico and easily within 50 miles of the Texas border.  He’s on Day 31...less than 69 days to go to make it from California to Florida in 100 or less days.

Today’s miles:  93
Total miles: 2239
